MCP servers for SQL databases

Ask questions of a real database in plain language.

These are the most useful servers on this site and the easiest to regret. Handing an agent a database connection turns every vague instruction into SQL against real rows, and most of these servers will happily run whatever they are given. The good ones make read-only the default rather than an option.

Before you install one

Three things that separate the servers here, none of which shows up in a description.

Does it have a read-only mode, and is it on?
Some of these expose a flag or a separate read-only connection. Several do not, and will run an UPDATE as readily as a SELECT. If you only ever want answers, an agent that cannot write is not a limitation, it is the feature.
The credential is the real boundary.
A server that calls itself read-only but connects as the owner is not read-only, because the limit lives in the tool and the tool is one prompt away from being talked around. Create a role that can only read, and give it that. This is the single most effective thing on this page.
Does it cap what a query returns?
An agent that runs SELECT * on a large table pulls the whole table into the context window, which is slow, expensive, and occasionally the fastest way to leak a customer list into a chat log. Look for a row limit you can set.
